The central government has approved a Rs 229 crore sewage treatment project for Shimla. The project will be completed by the year 2025 and cater the population of the hill town for the next 30 years. State had submitted a detailed project report to rejuvenate and lay the new sewerage network in the town to the Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organization (CPHEEO).
“CPHEEO has approved the project worth Rs 229 crore and itis being funded by World Bank under Program for Result (Pfor R),” said urban development minister Suresh Bhardwaj. He said that Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Limited (SJPNL)has taken up the project to lay 230 kilometer fresh sewerage network.
“Shimla town is expanding. Our aim is to provide sewage linkage to those deprived of it,” he said adding that the existing sewage line would also be upgraded by laying six inch diameter pipes. He said that the project has two components, laying fresh sewage linkage to the houses and upgrading the existing lines. This project will be completed by 2025 by SJPNL. He said that there are some households dependent upon septic tank for sewage disposal, and the scheme is intended to end this. Areas of Dali and Mashobra will also be linked to the facility under this scheme, he added.
